Winter is Coming! Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?…And the Right Kind?

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

I_am_Healthy1Contrary to popular belief, research shows nearly 3 out of 4 people are deficient in Vitamin D. Unfortunately; very few foods naturally contain vitamin D. This fact, coupled with the reality that many people do not have adequate everyday access to sun exposure, leaves most children and adults with a deficit of this important nutrient. Studies have shown vitamin-D deficiency can affect normal cellular replication, proper immune responses, and resilience against infections, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Other areas affected include heart function, bone and joint health, breathing, and even mood.

The Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for our body, meaning you must have it – and in an adequate amount – for proper health. The most common source of Vitamin D is exposure to sunlight. But with winter approaching, the combination of the cold that keep us indoors and the decreased amount of sunlight in most areas doesn’t bode well for us getting enough Vitamin D from the sun. Interestingly enough, research shows even those that live in warmer, sunnier climates can be deficient in Vitamin D!

There are several foods that are naturally high in Vitamin D, such as some oily fishes (salmon, mackerel, and herring), and now most milk, yogurts, and cheeses have added vitamin D in order to increase its intake in the daily diet. Supplementation is the next best way to fill in the Vitamin D gap. D3 is the best type, since D3 is converted and used by the body 500 times faster than Vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 is stronger when it comes to increasing and sustaining D in the body. it also has a longer shelf life than D2. Lastly, D2 is not the kind of vitamin produced by your body when exposed to sun – it is actually a synthetic form made generally from irradiated plant matter. Go with a liquid supplement, since liquid offers easier and faster absorption than tablets or pills. Choose a product that has no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and does not include any added sugars or unnecessary fillers.

How Do You Know if You’re Vitamin Deficient?

At your next doctor’s appointment, ask your physician for the very simple vitamin D test, called the 25(OH)D test. This very simple test can determine whether or not you’re getting enough vitamin D. There are also options for sending your blood sample to an independent laboratory for testing.
